Bathroom extractor fans
I need to replace mine. I want something nice and quiet, whilst sucking out all the steam quickly. Anyone have any ideas?

I've always wondered why there isn't a blower setting on an extractor fan. After all the shower clears itself quicker when the windows open and it's blowy outside.

If you're running an external extractor hood too you might get away with 4 inch, otherwise you need a 6 inch. Even a very small kitchen will fill up rapidly if you are in the habit of cooking 'properly' (rather than just microwave stylee).

You can always switch off a 6 inch if you are happy, but if the 4 inch isn't clearing it you are stuck with opening a window.

I am well aware of what 'the rules' say mate, but a lifetime of property renovation tells me different.

Doesn't matter to me tbh, it's not my property / décor in the firing line.

It appears my mate is a cunt - Who knew?

To be fair I think that's probably the case - He got divorced a couple of years ago, his wife hadn't slept with him for the previous 8 months - That's right 8 months

Funnily enough once they'd split she had a new bloke within 6 weeks

Why don't you open a window?

Nonsense about needing 6" in the kitchen. (Phnaar).

The fan should be sized according to the volume of the room, number of air changes required and/or extraction rates.

Over-run is useful, humidistat is often a PITA tho.

Manrose do a good range, some are especially quiet, I have them fitted in my places as standard and they are effective and reliable. 4 inch is fine but you really need a minimum of 6 inch for a kitchen extractor. It's about being sensible too - if you are in the habit of spending 25 minutes in the shower, no extractor will beat that...

Re: Bathroom extractor fans
147 - your mate is a twat.

Only use an integral one if you have to.

Most important consideration if its a new fan - where do you extract to? Ceiling or outside wall?

Measure the volume of the room, check the number of air changes per hour and extraction rate required in litres/second and go on the vent-axia website to pick a suitable fan (nearly always 4" for domestic bathrooms).

If there is a shower in the room, get a fan that is operated by Humidistat and over-run timer.

If it is fitted securely and any ductwork is also secured, I doubt you will hear a decent fan over the sound of the shower anyway.

Most fan noise is due to poor installation.

My MATE is just about to refit our bathroom he has recommended one that is integral with a downlighter i.e. Light and Fan all in one appliance

He's got one in his place

I know nothing about this but am happy to accept his recommendation, otherwise I would need to do some research and that's never gonna happen
